The scientific name of the coconut is Cocos nucifera. The Coconut tree belongs to the family Arecaceae. The coconut is the only living member of the genus Cocos. Coconuts belong to the palm family. Sexual reproduction from seed is the only propagation method available for the coconut. To avoid flower shedding, salt is poured on the apical portion of the flower buds and also spread at the root zone, and plenty of water is added. The tree needs plenty of moisture and sun to support strong growth. Most coconut trees grow 100 feet tall, although a few dwarf cultivars are available. Coconuts have shallow roots and need constant moisture. Coconuts can be germinated in containers and then transplanted a few months later when the leaves sprout.
